Refugees introducing our culture and art

Belgrade, 03/24/2022 – The APC/CZA integration sector strives to provide asylum seekers and refugees in Serbia with the opportunity to learn about local culture, the work of cultural institutions, to visit the theater, exhibitions and various cultural events, to become familiar with tradition and thus to include and feel like part of community.

We have a long-established collaboration with the National Theater in Belgrade in the field of social inclusion of refugees. As the measures due to the pandemic have been relaxed, asylum seekers and refugees once again have the opportunity to visit theater and ballet performances.

A group of clients from Burundi watched the ballet “Mamac” by choreographer Sanja Ninković.

Given that they had never seen a ballet before, they followed the entire performance intently. The overall impression of the young Burundians was that no one saw them as refugees, as people from the margins, but they felt like a part of the community, that at least for a while they left their isolation aside and could relax and enjoy themselves, that they felt like people . Such impressions mean a lot to us and confirm that it is important to work on social inclusion, getting to know the local culture and creating opportunities for acquaintance and exchange.
